I have an issue wherein I can't seem to find an RPG system that would satisfy all my needs from a game. Multiple crossroads for my wants are in front of me; classless vs broad classes, skill based vs not, how much GM support comes with the game, and how comprehensive it is for all situations. Learning new games is fun though I often think that excitement is a GM centric joy rather than one shared by all. Finding a system that could be played by my table for ongoing future across a variety of genres would be very nice as my tastes are varied and it would give us something to make our own. I would hate to fall into the trap of turn 5E into everything so a system with good bones that can take on a lot without carrying its own baked in assumptions into other genres. Perhaps it is a folly to think any one system can just be perfect outta the box, but I certainly want to take a look before I write it all off.
So far the systems I am considering are Mythras, Whitehack 4E, Openquest, and a classless take on OSE.
Mythras seems to satisfy a lot of what I want in a system but I fear that character generation may take a long time and for what I want to be an open table mega dungeon that might be a non-starter. But the combat and the way groups are handled really speak to me.
Whitehack 4E seems absolutely wild. I love the near classless takes on classes that allow you to be whatever you want. And the fact all of this is done quickly is a big boon. My only hang up is that I think the book is laid out in ways that can be confusing to players.
Openquest has a lot of what makes Mythras interesting to me but with some of its simplifications I feel like it may be missing just a smidge of the granular detail that excites me about Mythras.
Old School Stylish is a fan zine for OSE that transforms the game into be "job" based rather than class based. I adore the idea of finding jobs in the world or creating new ones of your own through investment or exploration. Only worry that the D&D vibes of it all may not be the most exciting for my players.
If I had to choose right now it would be a toss up between Mythras and Whitehack 4E. They both embrace player and GM freedom in a way that gets me truly excited to want to run them and create for them. Though putting this all out there like that kinda forces me to see that any system you're going to pick is going to need to be modified and hacked as time goes on. Which is especially true for longer games as you find the stress points that maybe weren't super obvious in smaller campaigns. I I don't want to pick any one of these as the only game I will play: just the de facto mode of play as other systems will surely grab my attention. There is something to be said for stability when it comes to group related things.I probably expect too much from what I can find and have primed myself to give too little.
